Backing Fire

Wade Tract, Arcadia
Thomasville, Georgia
November 2013
Oil on canvas
48" x 72"

Shifting winds created this dynamic composition of long leaf pine, wiregrass, smoke and fire on the Wade Tract of Arcadia. What moments before was a very smoky view of a flanking fire, set by a Tall Timbers Research Station prescribed fire “lighter”, has now briefly cleared as the fire begins to back into the wind. It will probably soon shift back to flanking. As the rainforest depends on rain, the plant and animal species of this "fire forest" depend on fire.
